The Orchard: Exhibition Opening Party and Reception

The Orchard: Opening Reception
Sunday, May 3 | 1:00–3:00 PM
Wyoming Fine Arts Center Ballroom

Join us for the free public debut of The Orchard — a community art exhibition rooted in conversation and brought to life by neighbors across Greater Cincinnati.

Over the past several months, Cincinnati-based artist Holly Yarab led hands-on workshops at six Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library branches — in Wyoming, Northside, North Central, College Hill, Madisonville, and Reading. At each stop, community members gathered to talk about what care, connection, and belonging mean to them, then channeled those conversations into something tangible: a small sculptural "tree" built together from simple materials and personal objects drawn from real, lived experience.

Each tree carries the spirit of its neighborhood. Together, they form a collective Orchard — shaped by many voices, many hands, and many stories. Come see it whole for the first time, meet the artist, and celebrate what grows when a community creates together.

Free and open to all ages! Join us to view the art, meet the artists (all of them), and enjoy some light bites and drinks.

Following this opening, The Orchard will spend the summer traveling to library branches across Greater Cincinnati.

The Orchard is presented by the Wyoming Fine Arts Center and supported through the GIG Fund, a program of Arts Midwest.

Freylekh Trio: Classical Chamber Music on the Village Green

Freylekh Trio at the Village Green

Spend a summer evening with live classical music on the Wyoming Village Green. The Freylekh Trio — soprano, violin, and piano — performs Yiddish folk songs: melodies rooted in Jewish tradition that are joyful, expressive, and connected to the human experience. It's a repertoire that doesn't get heard often enough, and this free outdoor concert is a rare chance to experience it live. Co-hosted by the City of Wyoming and Wyoming Fine Arts Center.

About the Ensemble:

The Freylekh Trio—comprised of soprano Kimberly Gelbwasser Lazzeri, violinist William Herzog, and pianist Christina Lalog Seal—brings together three artist-scholars from Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts who share a passion for storytelling through song. Their debut recording, Freylekh: A “joyful” rediscovery of De Cormier’s Yiddish Folksongs, reimagines these timeless melodies with vibrant musicianship and heartfelt connection. Drawing on their combined expertise in voice, strings, and keyboard, the ensemble creates performances that blend artistry, scholarship, and cultural rediscovery. With a commitment to sharing the expressive depth of Jewish folk tradition, the Freylekh Trio invites audiences into a musical world where joy, resilience, and community resonate through every note.

OLEA Ensemble: Classical Chamber Music on the Village Green

OLEA Ensemble at the Village Green

Spend a summer evening with FREE live classical chamber music on the Wyoming Village Green. OLEA Ensemble — clarinet, violin, and piano — brings an imaginative, community-centered approach to the concert experience, with a focus on living composers and music being written right now. We're thrilled to welcome them as friends of WFAC: clarinetist Kate Kilgus is a member of our teaching faculty. This free outdoor concert is co-hosted by the City of Wyoming and Wyoming Fine Arts Center.

About OLEA Ensemble:

“Not only inspiring, but refreshing” (I Care if You Listen), OLEA Ensemble envisions a future in which the transformative power of chamber music can be used as a model for healthy connection and collaboration in all facets of society. OLEA’s mission is to foster community connections through innovative curation of new music. Founded in 2021, OLEA is dually based in Chicago and Cincinnati, performing regularly across the Midwest. Members include Kate Kilgus (clarinet), Alayne Honaker (violin), and Marissa Kerbel (piano). OLEA’s members hold degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Lawrence University, and Kenyon College.

OLEA’s 2025-2026 season titled “You Are (Not) Alone” explores the dichotomy between community and loneliness that exists in our society today through three distinct programs: “Inside/Outside” (Fall 2025), “Sounds from Nature” (Winter 2026), and “All My Friends” (Spring 2026). “Inside/Outside” situates vocalist Annie Barr McAllister in conversation with our existing chamber ensemble to reflect upon the way that individuals can be simultaneously isolated from and included in a community. “Sounds from Nature” explores the human desire to be alone with nature. Being alone in nature allows us to simultaneously feel the peace of being isolated from other people with the comfort of being connected to plants and animals. “All My Friends” is a celebration of community and friendship. Through playing together, the members of OLEA have not only become respected colleagues and collaborators, but also close friends. The music on this program reflects on the power of friendship, trust, and collaboration! This season features several new works commissioned by the ensemble including pieces by Shane Scott Cook, Jacy Pedersen, Owen Hopper, Brad Balliett, Annie Barr McAllister, and Christopher Jessop.

By presenting music through themes that are universal yet personally relatable, OLEA aims to make classical music and new music relevant to 21st century audiences. In the fall of 2024, OLEA was the Artist in Residence at SOS ART in Cincinnati where they developed a project called “Contemplations on Democracy” which explored the intersection of art and politics, serving as both an interactive musical performance and a Get Out the Vote initiative. For this project, they collaborated with local poets and visual artists to provide a diverse set of perspectives on socio-political issues. Other recent projects include: “Yeehaw: American Folk Traditions” (2024) which incorporated music from traditions such as jazz, Appalachian fiddle, and ragtime; the commission and premiere of Owen Hopper’s “Wind Blows Lotus Leaves” (2023) alongside live demonstrations of the Tai Chi movements which inspired the composition; and “Summer Dreams” (2023) which explored the sounds of dreams from a fantastical storyline of a deep sleep to the shimmering texture of a daydream. OLEA has completed residencies at the Akropolis Chamber Music Institute (2025), Avaloch Farm Music Institute (2022), and the Decoda Chamber Music Festival (2022), and has performed at New Music Chicago’s ImpromptuFest (2023) and the Price Hill Music Festival (2023). In the summer of 2026, OLEA will take part in the Chamber Music Residency at Camphill Village Kimberton Hills.

Family Concert: KHOJ - Discovering the world of Ragas

KHOJ: Discovering the world of Ragas

Kanniks Kannikeswaran | Pratik Srivastava | Tejovrush Joshi

Khoj — the Hindi word for "discovery" — is an interactive concert experience exploring the classical music of North India. Cincinnati-based musician and scholar Dr. Kanniks Kannikeswaran leads the evening alongside Pratik Shrivastava on sarod (a fretless string instrument with a rich, resonant tone) and Tejovrush Joshi on tabla (the paired hand drums at the heart of Indian classical rhythm). The program weaves together live performance, guided listening, and hands-on demonstration — you'll learn what a raga is, how rhythm cycles work, and get a chance to try keeping time yourself. No background in Indian music needed. The format is welcoming and interactive, and kids are encouraged to participate. Come curious.

About the Concert Experience: The Art music tradition of India is based on the uniquely Indian concepts of the Raga and the Tala. ‘Khoj’ is an interactive exploration of Indian Art Music curated by Cincinnati based composer, educator and author Dr Kanniks Kannikeswaran along with virtuoso musicians Pratik Srivastava - an accomplished Sarode player and Tejovrush Joshi - a much sought after tabla player.

There is something for all listeners in this program, whether a connoisseur of Indian music or one with just a general level of interest in Indian music or culture. The evening will serve to demystify and answer questions such as ‘What is a Raga’? ‘What is a tala’? ‘How do I keep time’? ‘How is improvisation carried out in Hindustani music’? ‘What does an in-depth exploration of a raga feel like’?

Hosted in the historic Wyoming Fine Arts Center, this evening will educate as well as entertain.

Tickets are pay-what-you-can, with a suggested donation of $10-35 per attendee.

Accessibility note: The Wyoming Fine Arts Center building is accessible by stairs only. Restrooms are located in the basement and are also accessible by stairs only. If you require additional accommodations, please contact us in advance and we will make every reasonable effort to meet your needs.

About Indian (Hindustani) Music

Hindustani classical music is the ancient, raga-based tradition of North India, defined by its soulful improvisation and the sacred relationship between the guru and the shishya. Rooted in the 2nd century work Natyashastra and later treatises over the past two millennia and enriched by Persian and other influences during during the 2nd millennium CE, it balances structural rigor with deeply emotive melodic exploration. The system is built upon the foundational concepts of Raga (melody) and Tala (rhythm), creating a meditative experience that seeks to align the performer and listener with cosmic harmony. Today, it remains a vibrant global force, captivating audiences in world-renowned concert halls and inspiring diverse genres from jazz to contemporary cinematic scores.

About the Sarod

The Sarod is a prominent fretless string instrument in Hindustani classical music, descended from the ancient Afghan Rabab and refined into its modern form over centuries. Known for its deep, introspective tone and a polished metal fingerboard that facilitates seamless glides (meend), it creates a unique resonance that captures the emotional nuances of a Raga. Today, its popularity has surged globally through the legendary contributions of icons like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, who transitioned the instrument from royal courts to the world stage. Contemporary artists continue to expand its reach by integrating the Sarod into international jazz, world music, and film scores, ensuring its legacy remains vibrant and innovative.

About the Tabla

The Tabla is the primary percussion instrument of Hindustani music, evolving from the ancient mridangam and pakhawaj into a sophisticated two-drum set defined by its intricate finger techniques. Its history is rooted in the royal courts of North India, where distinct gharanas or schools of playing developed to accompany vocal, instrumental, and dance forms. Today, the Tabla is globally iconic, having transcended classical boundaries through the legendary virtuosity of maestros like Ustad Alla Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain. Its unparalleled rhythmic complexity has made it a staple in modern fusion, electronic music, and global cinematic scores, ensuring its status as one of the world's most versatile drums.
