This beginner-friendly painting class explores visual weight and balance through simple, hands-on exercises.  A series of guided prompts will help students understand how size, color, and placement work together to create strong, intentional compositions.  Students will leave with completed paintings and an understanding of these fundamental elements of art.

Week 1:Understanding Visual Weight & Balance
Explore symmetrical and asymmetrical balance through color mixing and painted-paper collage compositions.

Week 2:Building a Strong Composition
Discover how perspective influences visual weight and learn how to finalize and transfer a composition onto canvas.

Week 3: Creating with Shape & Asymmetry
Break objects into simple shapes and use visual weight, asymmetrical balance, and background gradients to begin your final painting.

Week 4: Bringing It All Together
Layer objects over a completed background and apply the principles of visual weight and balance to complete your final painting.

Take Home: One 16” by 20” painting, and a sketchbook
Skills & Knowledge Earned: Foundational understanding of composition, visual weight, and symmetrial and asymmetrical balance. Skills practiced include: color mixing, creating values and gradients, simplifying objects into basic shapes, using perspective, planning compositions, layering foreground elements over backgrounds, and transferring designs to canvas.

Meet Your Instructor: Maxwell Redder

Maxwell Redder is a Cincinnati-based artist working across painting, drawing, and sculptural forms. His work often explores pattern, repetition, and organic structures—particularly in the subject of fungi. His work most often uses acrylic paints to build layered, thoughtful compositions.

As an instructor, Maxwell approaches painting as something that can be learned through careful looking and steady practice, guiding painters in making more confident decisions on the canvas. His artwork can be found in collections around the country and in various establishments locally.
