Teaching Philosophy

Mr.B believes the critical thinking skills, dedication and patience, that one develops by studying music, are attributes that transcend the classroom; music helps instill forethought, integrity and the understanding of achievement, that students can apply to almost every aspect of life. Many of his students earn high marks and have won State & Regional gold medals in the Royal Conservatory of Music's Music Development Program assessments.

“A typical guitar lesson with me is generally split between technique and reading music. After a good foundation is laid the student can then bring music of their choice to the lesson, which will be incorporated into the study of technique and overall musicianship.    Music theory and songwriting are advanced topics that will be integrated with other lesson topics upon the student's request and readiness.”

Studying at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of music (CCM) provided Mr. B with a wealth of knowledge about the guitar. The degree requires the completion of a year long sequence of Guitar Pedagogy (the study of learning, ie. how students learn and how teachers educate). Whether you are interested in learning the basics, getting a handle on technique or taking a more serious look at articulation and phrasing, we think you will enjoy your lessons.

Donald Broerman is an active composer, whose compositions are primarily solo guitar works. His music has been heard in Concert at: The Cincinnati Guitar Society, Dayton Guitar Fest, CCM’s Something Dierent, Classical Revolution and House Concerts all over the midwest and as far as North Carolina. With three albums of original classical and classical crossover compositions, his music has reached listeners in 73 countries and 5 continents.  Donald holds a BM in Classical Guitar Performance at the University of Cincinnati, CollegeConservatory of Music (CCM) under the direction of Clare Callahan and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

He studied composition with Terry McQuilken at the University of Oregon, Orchestration at CCM and took private lessons with Jennifer Jolley (Professor of Music Theory and Composition at CUNY Lehman College, President and Co-founder of N.A.N.O. Works Opera Company).

He humbly gives back to the community through the Greater Cincinnati Guitar Society where he served as President from 2013 to 2022 and Society is Education Director from 2022-2023. He is a member and guitar adjudicator for the Ohio Music Educators Association and served as co-director and guitar faculty for the Summer Youth Guitar Workshop at CCM.
