OC Lab: Character Creator Course for Tweens!

$125.00

Do you have a sketchbook full of creative characters? Do you doodle designs inspired by your favorite anime, video games, and books? In this 8 week course, participants will learn how to turn their sketches into fully realized character concepts. We will start from scratch and build our characters bit by bit, culminating in a masterful presentation.

  • Dates: 8 weeks - June 16 - August 11 (no class during Summer Break on July 1)

  • Time: Tuesdays 6:30 - 8p

  • Ages: 12 - 16

  • Instructor: Caleb Redslob

  • Location: Wyoming Fine Arts Center

This course utilizes practical materials (No digital!)

Session 1: Inspiration + Ideation
Participants discuss favorite original characters and create 3 unique sketches based on prompts, or even their own past work.

Session 2: Refine + Finalize
Look at our ideas with fresh eyes and pick one character to focus on for the remainder of the course.

Session 3: Faces + Expressions
Students will practice expressions for their character and create 30 distinct emotional expressions. We will reference primarily anime and Pixar.

Session 4: The Power of The Pose
Students will practice dynamic poses, using each other as gesture models. We will begin by focusing on Spine, Shoulders, Hips, and then apply them to our OC.

Session 5: Color + Other Aspects
We explore color palettes, outfits, gear, or other special aspects of our character.

Session 6: Write Up
Now that we have a strong visual sense of a OC, students will complete a "Get to Know You" questionnaire to establish their character's personality, goals, and background information.

Session 7: Final Presentation Part 1
We begin creating the final presentation of our character, starting with a background that makes sense.

Session 8: Final Presentation Part 2
Participants finalize their characters presentations, including a full color render and background, write up, and other components created so far.
