Playwriting Workshop

The play’s the thing! Write, produce, and star in your own play! Throughout the week campers will create their own characters and story lines, play spontaneous improv games and co-create music. The final day culminates in a performance showcasing each child’s contribution to the whole – whether on stage, behind the scenes, or both! Facilitated by Serenity Fisher, three-time award winner of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival Audience Pick Award.

About the instructor:

Serenity Fisher teaches piano lessons to many young aspiring songwriters in the Cincinnati area.  She is also the front woman for nationally touring indie dream-pop band Serenity Fisher and the Cardboard Hearts.

You have your special and unique skill – PLAYING PIANO! WE have an answer for you: a PIANO BASH CAMP! Faculty from Wyoming Fine Arts Center and esteemed guest artists.

Do you want to know more and learn about jazz, improvisation, relationship between music and science and how it affects your brain, how to properly take care of your piano? Do you all this while also meeting and working with well-known national artists and teachers! In previous years, we hosted masterclasses held by artists of national allure, and we continue that tradition again this year. Students will work with: Dr. Richard VanDyke, Dr. Lian Tan (Miami U)Jerry Wong (Kent State), Nick Ross (Otterbein U), Irina Voro (UK).

Our goal is to provide an environment for beginning to advanced classical young pianists to learn more of their art and bond with other young pianists through their shared passion for music and the piano through level-appropriate activities. Over the past decade of tradition, the campers not only found this week a valuable experience, but a springboard for a year-long inspiration! We include various age and level appropriate activities. More advanced students do collaborative piano where they will be assigned instrumental and vocal accompanying compositions appropriate to their level and musical experience, and will be partnered with instrumentalist and a singer for coaching and practice sessions. Younger students will be exposed to and do activities from Orf, to fine arts and other music and movement activities.Camp also includes ensemble opportunities for each student. The music is sent to the applicant prior to camp commencement.

Claymation

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND. REGISTER EARLY CAMP FILLS QUICKLY!

claymation1

Create a riveting story complete with a cast of bendable characters and a stunning background! All you need is your imagination, and a mobile device with a stop-action app of your choice (ipad, android, or any other suitable mobile device – BUT NOT a digital camera).

We will spend the week developing a story line and characters, storyboarding, creating characters from plasticine or other materials, creating the sets and of course, shooting the film.  Work with a friend or solo.  Movies will be showcased on the last day.

NOTE: we do require a mobile device other than digital camera, as digital camera will require a computer and appropriate software. This is a cumbersome process and not suitable for this camp. Several years ago we did this camp with digital cameras, and it took waaay tooo long to upload and edit the film, mainly due to 3 factors: image sizes and a relatively large digital footprint that requires extreme amount of RAM, need for excess hard drive space, and need for processing speed (CPU) that’s above what normally comes on even the mid-range computers. Apps currently on the market are very cheap (many are free and paid ones cost no more than $5), simple, intuitive and integrate flawlessly in the mobile device memory and cpu speeds. They do an amazing job of automatically stitching the film together, including editing, adding sound effects, titles and subtitles, etc. Thus, no digital cameras!

Mobile Device and App of your choice: As you prepare for the camp, browse your app store for an appropriate stop-action app, and familiarize yourself with it. Many apps exist, some are free and some cost up to $4.99 (mostly to unlock all tools provided in the app). Read the app reviews, and consider getting an app that suits you and which you can use to showcase your full creative potential.

Remember: this camp is an educational experience. It’s created for a student to have fun, first and foremost. Stop-action app is the tool and your mind is the creator – along with instruction on developing the story line, storyboarding, etc, app is what brings it all together. Thus, make sure you are familiar with the app, to unlock all the creative possibilities of the student.

Yep, that is exactly what this week entails.  Get away from the computer screen for a bit and get creative building real scary creatures from The Nether or take a walk on the lovely side and make a field of mushrooms grow.  Paint your favorite scene in blocky/pixel style; build a creeper with clay or felt.  You are only limited by your imagination and your will to survive (not really).

Camp fee includes a t-shirt.

Join Wyoming Fine Arts Center veteran choreographer Steve Irwin and music director Nancy Huey  in this year’s production of Lion King KIDS.

Welcome to The Lion King Experience!

Disney’s The Lion King has captivated the imagination of audiences around the world and now you have the opportunity to take part in this one-of-a-kind musical with our two most favorite theater teachers in the whole wide world. The African savanna comes to life on with Simba, Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle… and back again, in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale.

The Lion King Experience features a rigorous curriculum designed to introduce the student to a wide range of theatrical skills. This program has been developed to EXPLORE, CREATE and SHARE the arts with all students.

Final 45 minute production is on Friday, the last hour of the camp.

Notes:

Due to the camp structure and educational nature of our programs, this production may be edited for language and duration, and is age appropriate.

NOTE: Steve Irwin and Nancy Huey are teaching both productions.

IMPORTANT AUDITION INFORMATION:

Please note that EVERYONE WHO SIGNS-UP AND AUDITIONS WILL HAVE A PART. The auditions are only to assist us in assigning parts.

AUDITION DATES:

  • Sunday 5/21 @ 1:00 – 2:00 PM
  • NEW TIME!!!! Friday 6/23 @ 4:30 – 6:00 (ish) – Audition is for July Camp only.

The audition process is very relaxed and the duration will depend on number of campers – it may take 60-90 minutes…

Each child should prepare a song (preferably from a show, such as “Seussical, JR.”, “Willy Wonka”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Aladdin”, “The Sound of Music”, “Wizard of Oz”, etc.). At the audition, the children will also take turns reading from the script and learn a song and choreography from the show.

Please note that everyone who auditions will get a role in the show! The auditions are simply to assist us in determining the best part for each child. The audition will last approximately 60-90 minutes.

SCRIPTS and PRACTICE SOUNDTRACK

You will receive a copy of the libretto at the audition (must be returned to us after the production – so take a good care of your copy!) You can also pick-up a copy of it at our office, or, download the PDF version of the libretto (see the link below).

  • SCRIPTS: Scripts are available for download HERE. This is our DropBox folder (music is also there). In the folder, click on appropriate files to download the pdf files of the scripts. They are at the bottom of the folder, below the music. You will be able to also pick up a script at the Fine Arts Center office from Claire at your convenience. For quicker access, we encourage you to utilize the download option. YOU DON’T NEED MEMBERSHIP TO DROPBOX TO ACCESS FILES. JUST EX OUT OF ANY POPUPS.
  • AUDIO: Audio tracks are available for download HERE. We will not make cd copies. If you don’t have a way to download, let us know.  YOU DON’T NEED MEMBERSHIP TO DROPBOX TO ACCESS FILES. JUST EX OUT OF ANY POPUPS.
  • IF you decide to sign-up for a free DropBox account, please include the following email as the referring email – it will give us more free storage, and it won’t cost you anything. Referring email — Director@MusicArtDance.org.

Anyone registered for the camp MUST audition (in person preferred). If you cannot make these dates and time but still want to participate in the camp, please let us know. Video upload may be accepted for students who can not make the audition times, or for students coming from out of town. Student should sing 2 songs songs of their choosing on the video (more details on which songs TBD in May). However, for best experience make every attempt to make one of the two audition times.

If you sign-up for the camp AFTER the audition and assignment of parts, you will still be able to participate and be assigned various chorus parts.

NOTE: If you miss the audition dates, you can still register for the camp. As main roles are determined 2-3 weeks prior to the camp, if you are in that window, you may still upload to YouTube your 2 minute audition video representing your singing of your 2 pieces. This will give the directors the ability to appropriately assign the parts to you, as applicable, but does not guarantee you a main role. If you are signing up less than 2-3 weeks prior to camp, we still need your video and you will be assigned an appropriate chorus part. Remember that this is an educational experience, and participating in the production will benefit the student regardless of the part assigned.

NOTE: Once you upload your video, remember to contact the office and email us the link to the video.

NOTE: Video settings on the upload have to be either ‘Public’ or ‘Unlisted’ for us to be able to view it. Do not make your videos ‘Private’ as that does not allow for viewing to anyone but you. If you are concerned about privacy, make the video ‘Unlisted’ and then after you get your part assignment, you can either delete the video or make it ‘Private’. If we can’t see your video, you will be assigned parts at the Director’s discretion on the first day of the camp and will be assigned chorus parts of which there are many.

Please, sign-up early.Thank you!

* LUNCH HOUR ONLY: If registering for AM and PM camp WITHOUT early drop-off and late pick-up, and the child WILL STAY here for the lunch hour (please bring bag lunch), supervised lunch hour is available for FREE. We still need to know you will not be picking-up your camper between AM and PM sessions, thus  Click here to register for supervised lunch hour, or register from the ‘Summer Camps — Summer At A Glance” menu (top right, first entry in the camp listing).

* Contingent on adequate enrollment – camps may be cancelled due to low enrollment – register early to reserve your spot and avoid cancellations.

Dance/Theater Summer Camps

Take your mark, smile, aaaand…. dance and sing!

Is your 5 – 8 year old always singing and acting around the house? Than the Mini Musical with Ms. Mary is for him! How about your 8+ year old? Musical Theater Camp might just be the right thing!

Mini Musical Director (and our Musik Kids Program Director) Ms. Mary Rekers creates an environment where children will learn a new musical composed by Ms. Mary especially for these camps. For older children, Musical Theater Camp Music Director Keith Minnery and Director and Choreographer Steve Irwin take children on a learning adventure and a production of a junior version of major musical. Well known in the tri-state as experienced educators, Mr. Minnery and Mr. Irwin will teach the children ins and outs of acting, dancing and singing, while putting on a full one-hour production of a wonderful musical.

Music Summer Camps

Chosen through a rigorous selective process, faculty at the Wyoming Fine Arts Center is comprised of 35 educated and experienced musicians, dancers and artists. With years of experience in educating children and adults, many are also performing and creating artists, thus bringing a unique blend of theoretical and practical knowledge to our students.

Art Summer Camps

It’s summer – and it needs to be filled with creative artistic endeavors! Whether the child is just a young expressive beginner or is an art expert, our camps are guaranteed to be fun! They will challenge each student at their level, while creating a collaborative and supportive environment for each child to find or develop his or her artistic voice in a fun and nurturing environment. Best of all – a ton of art will be created and brought home at the end of the camp week for everyone to enjoy. Select art work will be featured on our end of summer art exhibit!
